How to prevent distraction burglary
Distraction burglary begins with the perpetrator gaining entry to your property therefore it is especially important that you thoroughly vet any callers before allowing them into your home. This breed of burglar comes in all shapes and sizes, even women, children and elderly people so don’t give anyone the benefit of the doubt.
Methods for gaining entry to a property can range from anything from claiming to have lost a pet, asking for a glass of water or even medical assistance. One of the most common techniques used to gain entry is to pose as a worker from a utilities company, local council or a door-to-door salesman. If they are legitimate and work for one of these recognised companies they will have ID. Take this from them and close the door. Call the company they claim to be working for using a phone number you have from a bill, not the one they give you. Remember if the caller is unexpected you have every right to be suspicious. Even utilities companies usually phone ahead to warn you to expect a visit.
It’s a good idea to have a peep hole fitted in your door so you can have a good look at the caller without having to open the door. If you do open the door, keep the chain on whilst you speak to them, this will prevent them from barging in if their intention is to steal.
If you do decide to let them in, firstly ensure that your back door or any other entrances are locked. Distraction burglary often works by having one of the gang distract the victim whilst the other sneaks in undetected from another entry point.
As an added measure, never keep large amounts of cash in your home. Also keep all keys away from front and back doors as thieves can easily spot these and make away with your car, or gain entry to your home using they key whilst you’re out. If you do have expensive items such as jewellery in your home, invest in a safe for added security.
Remember, if you have any concerns regarding the person who is standing on your doorstep, don’t let them in. If the caller is particularly suspicious you should report him/her to the police giving as much detail as possible. Your action could prevent another from falling victim to this form of crime.
